God is bigger than any problem!

Dear Children in K.I

We have just learned the sad news that the Pentecostal Church where we do our Bible Camps each summer was burned last night. We are very sad by this tragedy but we just wanted to post a short note to let you all know that God is in control and that no problem, not even this big problem is bigger than HIM!

Yes, we are sad that the Church burned, we are very sad just like you are but we want you to know that God will find a way for us to come back next year and do Bible Camp again like we've been doing for 6 years. You are more important than a building and we are all glad that no one was hurt in the fire. Please don't worry and trust in God and also pray pray pray! God will hear your prayers and He will come through for all of us!

I was in Thunder Bay on Monday, March 17 and witnessed the court sentencing of the community leaders. On behalf of all of us at The Sanctuary, I wanted to say that we are praying for all of you during this difficult time.

Zack: It was cool to run into you at the airport. We are praying for your Aunt Cecilia.

We are also praying for Sadie, Harriet and her sister-in-law. I met all three of them in Thunder Bay.

Christmas Shoe Boxes for BTL!

Yesterday at the Sanctuary Church here in Oakville, we announced our yearly Christmas Shoe Box drive! For those of you that don't know what this is, I will explain in details so you know what's the scoop!

First, we have a list of all the names of all the children/teens/adults that attended our summer Bible Camp in Big Trout Lake. When we have all the names counted, we then go to shoe stores and ask if they have empty shoe boxes to donate. They usually have a lot! So we gladly take what they can give us. Once we know the amount of children and their names, we then make HUGE boards with the names on it. Here's an example:

We brought all the boards with all the names to Church yesterday and the Church members got to pick a child they would like to send a shoe box to. Our Church looks forward to this event each year!

Once they pick a name, we give them an empty shoe box that they'll fill up with goodies and toys and fun stuff. They will also wrap your shoe box for Christmas :)

We then collect all the filled shoe boxes and ship them to Big Trout Lake!
I know it seems a little early to be talking about Christmas but as you can see, a lot of planning is needed and we do it early so we can make sure the shoe boxes arrive on time for Christmas!

We'll give you an update soon when the shoe boxes are shipped! Until then, God Bless you and we miss you very much!

Sports Camp!

Hello all!
Well summer vacations are behind us and a new school year has begun.
I hope you all had a wonderful summer, I know we did because we got to see all of you!
Here's a post about our afternoon Sports Camp.
Playing different sports with all of you was awesome and I hope you all keep up with your juggling skills for next year ;)

One of my favorite parts of the afternoon was seeing how many of you were able to memorize the Bible scriptures we handed out. Here's a little reminder of what passage we looked at on day 1. Remember to read your Bibles often so you can learn and know how awesome God truly is!

Morning Bible Camp Day 1

Hey guys!
Hope you've been enjoying all the photos and the video we posted for you.
This is a new post with some pictures about our first Day of Bible Camp.

Our week there was so amazing, we wish we could've stayed longer.

Doing Bible camp for a week was awesome!

Hi everyone. I wanted to introduce a minstry that shares a common goal with us. They are LAMP Minstries.

Their Mission: LAMP is a cross-cultural ministry sharing Jesus Christ with God’s people in remote areas of Canada.

For the past three years, I have been in contact with Jeanne. Jeanne has been leading a team to Big Trout Lake longer than we have.

Here is an extact from a letter that Jeanne just sent as she prepares for tomorrow's departure to do God's Work.

We leave tomorrow (Thursday), return the 8th of July. We also have a large team this year, six are new, four returning; some new Christians, some have known Christ for quite some time. As you, I would ask that God would work not only in the lives of the kids/teens/adults we meet and change their hearts and lives, but also that He would work in our lives and draw us closer to Him through this wonderful experience.

-Pray for protection for us, that we would remain healthy, and that God would also keep our families and prayer partners safe.

-Pray that the Holy Spirit would continue to break through the darkness of drugs, alcohol, and abuse.

-Pray that we would be sensitive to the leading of the Spirit, and be obedient as He leads us.

-Pray for wisdom for the team members, and a unity of mind and purpose as we are directed by God.

I echo the flexibility prayer of yours; let God’s will be done, not ours. Thank you so, so much for praying for us, Dan! We will let you know how amazing God worked after we return home. It’s so exciting to know that you will be following us and continuing to minister to the people we love in BTL.

Good afternoon Dan:

Great to hear from you, and a real pleasure to meet you last night. Christian Horizons helped to provide a camp last year, specifically for individuals with developmental disabilities - Tikinagan FACS worked ahead to identify youth, and had them flown in to Big Trout Lake for a week of residential camp. This year, we are looking to support similar individuals in Big Trout Lake, (Aug 5-11) hopefully 10 for the> 24/7 residential portion, while hosting a recreational - day camp on site for kids in the community.

FTC is coordinating the programs and logistics for the general running of the camps, including 3 weeks in Mishkeegogamang, July 15-Au4. Our posting on the CH web site is for volunteers to serve specifically those with special needs, within an> integrated camp program.

My guess, is that you may have experienced team members that would enjoy giving more of their summer, and perhaps we could find opportunities for them via CH or FTC's recruiting for the weeks around the Sanctuary's camp. Volunteers within our program would have their expenses covered, and a small honourarium given.

Pasta Night & Auction Update!

WOW!
What a weekend it has been!
I have tons of pictures to share with you all...but first let me make a short announcement:

Thank you God for making this event a huge success to bring glory to your name!
Thank you to all the Mission Team Members for making this night a success!
Each and everyone of you made this possible and you're incredible!
Thanks to all those who prayed for us, God is Good!

So with that being said...let's get down to business...enjoy the pics :-)

The crowds came in big numbers! We had close to 100 people. We could barely keep up in the kitchen making the pasta. It was so great to see them coming to support our BTL efforts.

Everyone was happy and looking forward to the Live Auction to get started. Brett our host for the evening was great! That guy can get the crowd going! Let me hear a woohoooo!!!

Here's a happy bidder that won a beautiful aromatherapy basket. And that's not all! There was tons of other goodies that generous local business provided and also services from our Church members.

We also had activities for the children such as guessing jars full of chocolates and making pasta necklaces. The little ones loved it! Here's Kelley helping those little ones. Isn't she great?

This is behind the scenes in the kitchen. Some of them needed to take a break and eat something! Everyone was full of energy to help out and they needed to recharge before going out there again and making sure the evening went without glitches. Right Kelley?

And finally, what's a meal without dessert right? We had a beautiful cake made my Leeann and her mom with the KI emblem and colours. It was so pretty, I just wanted to stare at it. Yummy!

Pasta Auction Fundraiser!

We've been busy planning for this big fundraising effort that takes place Saturday March 31st 2007.

This is our first Pasta Night & Live Auction.
We are inviting our Church community to come and participate in this important event.
We are going to have pasta and more pasta!

During the evening we will have a Silent Auction that people can bid on items that will be displayed there.

Then we will have a Live Auction that will be really animated and really cool.
Do you know what an Auction is? I would describe it as a Real Life Ebay!
We will have lots of items for bidding.

All the proceeds from this evening will go towards the Big Trout Lake Mission Team.
Just like the Bake Sale that we had last month, this fundraiser will be followed by many others so stay tuned to know what's next!

We have to go back to work as there is still lots to do and everyone's helping out to make this a very successful event! Our daughter Danelia has been a busy little bee making the Auction Paddles that she designed herself...with the help of mom of course!

I will post pictures of the event on Sunday! Pray Pray Pray that this event is a HUGE success and that God will give us strength, unity and organization skills to make it a night to remember.

Bake Sale Success

It's been a while since I've posted but that's only because we've been extremely busy preparing for this summer's Bible Camp.
You probably don't know this but each member of the Mission Team is responsible for finding their own monies to pay for this trip. Every member has to collect a specific amount of money that covers their food, plane tickets and other things that cost money. Each member does their collecting of monies but we also do fundraising events at our Church to help us out.

We have a few ideas on how to raise monies for this summer's camp. One of them was to do a Bake Sale. What is a bake sale you ask? Well this is how it works. Every member of the Team donated a baked good such as cake, cookies, muffins and other goodies that we could sell at Church on a Sunday morning. Some other members of the team offered to help with the sales, help decorate the tables or/and plan the event.

This is what the table looked like 2 sundays ago. Drooling yet? LOL
The table was filled with tons of goodies, as you can see, there was plenty available for sale. Can you believe that we sold every single one of those goodies? Everything was gone right down to the last cookie!

Look at these decorations! We sure have talented people on our team! Leeann put this fun arrangement with BTL facts and pictures. Everyone loved it! Cool stuff indeed.

Kuddos to the BTL Fundraising Team for putting this successful event together and kuddos to all of those who helped in any way make this fundraiser a great start!

I received the gifts on Saturday and I was at the church this afternoon for the children to pick up their gifts. I explained to the children the gifts had come from the summer camp team. They are asking about next summer's camp and asking about Bubba..I told the children Bubba had moved to the states and will not be returning for next summer camp. I did tell them that you will be taking over and there are more persons for the team this year.

My thought today was " For unto you a child is born" as I was with the children today.

First of all, the Christmas shoe boxes that we sent to Big Trout Lake over a month ago are currenty in Pickle Lake. Hopefully they will be with Dorothy McKay shortly.

Meet My Family - Part Deux

Here's another post about a member of my family.
This little lady is the apple of my eye.
She will be Daddy's Little Girl forever.
She's Danelia

Danelia is 10. Before Danelia was born, my wife had a name picked out for her. My wife wanted to name her after something that represented both of us. Being the creative person that my wife is, she came up with something different. With my name being Dan and my wife's name being Noelia..if you put those two together it makes "DANelia". Get it? Her name was a part of both of us and so is she. Ok so we fell in love with her name and it was a no brainer that we would keep the name once she was born. We knew all along that she was going to be a girl. We expected her arrival with such anticipation and joy like we had never experienced before. We knew she would be special. Danelia made us parents and we have been blessed by her everyday. Danelia takes after her mommy alot. She's just as beautiful and also very creative. I love spending time with her. I love taking Danelia out to the restaurant and to a movie afterwards while my wife stays home with Joshua. We call those "Daddy and Daughter dates".

Danelia is a very responsible little girl and very patient with her little brother. She loves teaching him to color and his shapes and numbers. She's a great big sister and Joshua loves her very much. Danelia loves playing Piano, her first song that she composed was called "God, you are my all". We are so proud that Danelia loves reading her Bible and loves learning about Jesus. She looks forward to every Sunday when we go to church. She loves the worship part and has a pretty voice. When Danelia will be a little older, she will be able to come to Big Trout Lake with me and my wife. She's looking forward to it! She loves looking at the pictures of all the children at BTL and knows many by name. She also prays for you all! She loves all of you very much and she was so happy to send her shoe box to Chasity. She picked every little gift with care and love.

I'm back. I was thinking recently that I've never introduced my family to all of you. Some of you have seen some pictures of my little family but most haven't. Today, I will share with you the youngest of my clan, it's Joshua. Let's talk about Joshua for a moment shall we? Joshua is our little boy, he's just over 2 years old. Something particular about Joshua is his hair. He has lots of curly hair and my wife would kill me if I cut it. She loves his curls. Joshua is no ordinary boy, he's very smart and funny, he's genius-like and knows tons of words for his age, but of course I say that because I'm a proud Dad and Joshua sure makes me proud. He's only 2 but he knows so much about God already. If you ask him where God is, he will reply "God Heart" and he will touch his heart on his chest with his little hands. When we have meals together he will bless the food for us like this "Dear God, Bless Food, Amen" of course it sounds more like "Dee Go, Bess Foo, Ama". My wife and I think that it's great that our children will know God from a very young age and in Joshua's case since birth. Do you know what Joshua means? Joshua means "God is Salvation" as in God is my savior. If you look in your Bible in the old testament, there's a man named Joshua. He's a great warrior and believed in God. I wish the same for my son Joshua. I want Joshua to be a great warrior for Jesus and to never stop at anything to grow the Kingdom of God. Tonight, say a little prayer for Joshua.

This is our way to tell you how much we love and care for everyone one of you.
Soon I will be posting a video with Christmas greetings from people from our church, so keep watching for that soon.
I know I've been neglecting this little blog but please know that if some days go by (OK maybe more than just a few days) and you don't hear from me, that you are still in my prayers and in my heart. Sometimes life gets so busy with family, work and other commitments but remember that this blog is still a PRIORITY for me so don't give up on me and PLEASE POST YOUR COMMENTS! I would really love to hear from all of you and I would like to know suggestions about what you would like for me to talk about.

Where in the world is Dan?

I've been MIA for the last few days or so but I have a good excuse this time. I was very sick, as a matter of fact I am still recovering from a bad cough that escalated into a bronchitis. It took a toll on me and I had to rest it up. So for any of you out there, I would ask that you pray for God's healing touch upon me. Eventhough I've been sick, we had a lot of things going on here that could not be put on hold. Our church had its Annual Christmas Shoe Box drive for all of you my little and not so little friends up North. God has been so good at providing every detail for this special event to carry on this year. We had an awesome team that came together to make this event happen and you want to know why? Because God loves you SO much and all of us at the Sanctuary love you too! So this year, you will receive God's blessings in each and every shoe box sent your way. We want you to know that we care about you and that we are praying for every single one of you at Big Trout. So there you go, we've been busy getting all those shoe boxes packed and shipped so this blog has been negleted a bit but no worries, it's still very much alive!

You will be updated with some events that will take place in the near future but for now I leave you with some pictures of our Annual Shoe Box Packing Party! We had a great time wrapping your shoe boxes for Christmas.

Why Do They Call It Big Trout Lake?

Actually, this First Nation is not even called Big Trout Lake. They went through a name change a while back and are now called Kitchenuhmaykoosib. As we continue to post stories, you will see Big Trout Lake referred to with different names. Here are some of the names to be familiar with:
Big Trout Lake, BTL, Kitchenuhmaykoosib, Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug, Rez 209 and KI.

All of these refer to the wonderful community that we love.

And in case you are wondering why it was called Big Trout Lake, here's a clue.

I think his name is Stanley (please someone let me know if I am correct here).
Here is Stanley with one of the largest fish that I have seen outside of a magazine.

Planning for Next Year - 2007

This has been a very busy week for me. It's like we just got back from Big Trout Lake and we are already in the initial stages of planning next year's trip. There is a lot of work to do because we want to put every effort into making sure that everyone has the greatest time.

I would like to introduce you to someone who's heart and support will continue to make our trip to BTL continue from year to year. The person that I am referring to is Garry. Garry is the Pastor of the The Sanctuary Church in Oakville, of which I have the privilege to call home. Although, I probably have never told him this in person, he is a true model of what it is to be serving. If all you campers remember what a Hero is, Garry is definately that and more.

Some of you might be wondering ... why do you have a picture of Taylar as part of a story about Garry?? Well ... that's because Garry is Taylar's father.

I won't be able to post this weekend as I will be spending time with family so I want to wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving! I will leave you with these thoughts...
What are you thankful for? Think about it and post your thoughts.

I AM THANKFUL FOR...

A God, that is my shelter in times of trouble.
A wife, that loves me and understands me better than no one else.
My children, that bring me more joy than I could ever imagine.
Family, that is here to support and pray for us.
Friends that we can count on anytime.
Our Church that is a home away from home.
A job that is challenging but has its many rewards.
A home that witnesses our everyday lives.
The vibrant colors of the Fall.
A comforting homecooked meal.
The laughter of my children while they're at play.
Music that uplifts me and gives me freedom to worship.

And last but not least, I AM THANKFUL for the people at Big Trout Lake that I call friends.

First Confirmed Attendee - Next Year

I have the honor of announcing the first confirmed attendee for next year's trip to Big Trout Lake. Although she hasn't sent in her application yet, I really don't expect to say no :)
This woman ROCKS MY WORLD!
She is the one who keeps me on the path. She is my guide and my comfort ... and most of all ... my voice of reason. She is the mother of my children...
It is Noelia, my wife, my first and everlasting love. We have been married for 11 wonderful years and I look forward to many more. There is no better person that I would rather serve the Lord along side of.

2006 Christmas Shoe Boxes

This week a few of us got together to come up with a plan for the 2006 Christmas Shoe Boxes. In case some of you don't know what I'm talking about, here's how it goes.

Every year, we make a list of Big Trout Lake participants available to our church. People attending our church would take a name and fill a shoe box with Christmas gifts. Then we ship the shoe boxes to BTL so that Dorothy McKay can hand out the boxes to the children. This is a very exciting time for a lot of people in our church, because there are are quite a few that wish that they could go to BTL, but can't because of work and other issues. This gives them the chance to connect and show the love that they have for the people of Kitchenuhmaykoosib.

Time for me to present another amazing person from BTL First Nation (AKA Rez 209). We had the greatest time hanging out with her. She was playing soccer with us and she was a real pro. Everyone had a blast playing with her. She is twelve years old and if I remember correctly, will be turning 13 in February. Am I right? A couple of days ago, I was searching through the almost 1500 photos of Big Trout Lake 2006 and couldn't find any pictures of our friend (UNTIL NOW !!). Muaahahahaha!! There is no escape. This time you get to be in the spotlight. I hope you don't mind. It's just that we want know how cool you are !

It's not like me to just go out and ask for stuff, but after much thought, here it goes:

Given that I work a full-time job during the day and try to be a full-time dad in the evening, it does not give me much time to create lots of posts for this blog site. Therefore, I look to you, the readers, to send me stories so that they can be posted on this site.

Examples:
If you live in Big Trout Lake, please share something that might be going on your life OR tell me about camp or God or your friends, or a funny story. We had such a good time with all of you that we would love to hear from you all year round.
OR
Maybe you have been on a trip to Big Trout Lake in the past, either with The Sanctuary, another Church, or just passing through. Please tell us about it. It could be a story about yourself, or a someone living in Big Trout Lake.

Maybe you have been to or lived in Big Trout Lake. You could drop a line to say hi, or share your comments or feelings about anything that is on your heart.

Dorothy McKay - our sister in Christ

When a person asks me about Big Trout Lake and the people there, I immediately think of my good friend Dorothy McKay. Dorothy is the Director of the Women’s shelter in Kitchenuhmaykoosib and has been instrumental in us being able to run our Bible Camp. Whether it was preparing the church for our arrival or attending to our day to day needs, she has been a real servant as Christ was, as well as a role-model. The hope and prayer that Dorothy has for her community shines bright in my life and the lives of the entire group from Oakville that had the honour of receiving her prayers and wisdom.

It has been a whole two months since we left Kitchenuhmaykoosib. Fourteen of us had the greatest time spending with so many wonderful people. We spent a week in Kitchenuhmaykoosib. In case some of you don't know where it is, Kitchenuhmaykoosib (AKA Big Trout Lake) is located 2400 kilometres north of Toronto. We drove for 2 1/2 days and flew for 90 minutes before we arrived at this gorgeous place. We set aside our friends, families and jobs to serve and play with 60-70 wonderful children.

Here are some of the people we met. I would like to introduce you to Becky. Becky was attending both the morning and afternoon camp. She was always smiling and we just loved being around her. Becky is eight years old (maybe 9 by now!) and we appreciated every moment that we spent with her. We will be posting pictures of different people that we have come to love over the coming months.

This is Fabian. Fabian is 12 years old and wouldn't leave us alone (just kidding!). Fabian was really funny and knew how to make us laugh even when we were tired from the day. He was also at both camps and we look forward to seeing our him again next year.

It's almost time for this year's team to depart for K.I. (Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug) AKA Big Trout Lake. We are fourteen people going up to Big Trout Lake this year and everyone one of us are excited about it. We can't wait to see everyone again. Here are names of this year's team:

When I started this web site, I promised myself that I would update it often. Obviously this has been a lot more difficult than I thought. It’s easy to become distracted with the commitments of our daily lives. Some of us are caught up in work or school or it may be the constant activities that consume our week. That’s why today will be different. Today I am renewing my focus on Jesus as Lord of my life. He has reminded me that my time at Big Trout Lake was not only a summer trip, but a focus on loving and serving the great kids that God created. I continue to pray that the Holy Spirit prepares their hearts and reaches to them on a daily basis.

To all the cool kids in Kitchenuhmaykoosib:
May you continue to remember that God created you as wonderful people.

BTL Hockey

In case any of you weren't aware, Big Trout Lake is well known for hockey. They have always produced great teams and win lots of tournaments. Here is a picture of the PeeWee team that won last year.

I know at least six people in this picture.
